Backstory: This song was inspired in 1979 by a conversation, and agreement,
I had made with my girl, Peggy.
No, we never really went to Colorado, and discovered our mutually agreed upon, final resting place. But we HAD discussed the concept, and were steadfast that, as soon as we could afford it, we’d make the site survey quest out West.
Well, when I wrote “My Friend,” inspired by my then-best buddy swiping her away, I astutely deciphered it was highly unlikely she and I would ever be making the trip. But the sentiment was organic, and genuine. In a nutshell, in this fictional story, the chick soulmate croaks ahead of schedule.
Me, being a man of my word, I fictionally followed through and made the journey, accompanied my her ashes contained in a denim bag I envisioned I had fashioned from an old pair of her blue jeans (What? She wasn’t gonna need them, anymore!!). So, as agreed upon, I arrive at the predetermined, ash-scattering, awe-inspiring mountainside view to do “the deed.”
However, I also put an unexpected twist on our agreement via an unaddressed loophole.
To “remain” with her, I voluntarily laid down my life under her implied, celestial supervision, and with God’s understanding. Good thing it was just a fictional, concept tune. It’s hard to raise a family, run a few businesses, and enjoy life when life is extinguished. Plus, it’s just so permanent.

Lyrics

Mountain
If you go ahead me, be sure to wait for me.
While I travel ‘cross the land, with a denim bag in-hand.
To the place we chose before.
The one we both adored, and we said, “Yes. This place is best.”
I swore ….

CHORUS
I‘d climb that mountain for you, Love.
I‘d climb that mountain for you, Love.
Anything for you, my Love.

Was on Colorado ground, we sought, and surely found….
Our final resting place. Open air, and open space.
We didn’t have to speak at all. Our eyes just said it all.
We sat and stared. Then, I declared…….

CHORUS
I‘d climb this mountain for you, Love.
I‘d climb this mountain for you, Love.
With our witness from above.

BRIDGE
The angels staked their claim.
Life’s not the same.
You’ve left me. You’re gone now.
But not for long, now.

Now that I’m left behind, one way to ease my mind.
So, I took your precious dust, and the strength of both of us.
And, now I’ve travelled to this place.
With your guidance and His grace, I lay me down...
One this chosen ground.

CHORUS
I‘ve climbed this mountain for you, Love.
I’ve climbed this mountain for you, Love.
I did it all for you, my Love.
I‘ve climbed the mountain for you, Love.
I’ve climbed this mountain for you, Love.
Only one I’m thinking of.
I‘ve climbed this mountain for you, Love.
I’ve climbed this mountain for you, Love.
So, come and take me, my Love.
